This is a classic work and a must-read for anyone seriously interested in mythology and in particular hero mythology. But it was written about a century ago and so it is seriously out of date in terms of its psychological and mythological theory, and the translations of the texts under discussion are also antiquated and often inaccurate.

Birth Order Theory. The birth order theory was first coined by Alfred Adler. This is a theory that often refers to the order of birth in which one was born in. He was the first to say that “not only the parents but also the siblings influence the child’s behavior characteristics” (Leman, 2000).

Birth order is simple, but it’s not simplistic. There are standard birth order rules, and there are also exceptions to the standard birth order rules (both of which we’ll also talk about in this book). However, the exceptions are explainable when you understand how birth order works. Even the exceptions develop because of when you were born.
They share our parents and our family history, but their personalities can be so different. Birth order offers an intuitively appealing explanation for these perplexing differences. The only problem is, it’s a myth. Psychologists have speculated on the effects of birth order on personality for well over a century.
In the first two essays on this website, I summarized the results of more than half a century of research on birth order. My conclusion was that birth order does not have noticeable effects on adult personality. The question I must deal with now is: Why do most people -- including most psychologists -- continue to believe that birth order does have important effects on adult personality?
